"Rossellini was well aware that his films were not like
those of other people, but he very sensibly decided that it was the others
who ought to change." |

FROM ITS EARLIEST DAYS, movies and
movie commentary have sought popular acceptance by maintaining the status
quo, sticking to formulas and preserving industry. But artists, rebels, and
visionaries have resisted, offering difficult truths through innovative work.
Archivists like Henri Langlois and
critics like André Bazin championed maverick filmmakers (including Roberto
Rossellini and Robert Bresson) and helped inspire worldwide revolutions in
how movies were made and what they had to say, personified by the films of
Jean-Luc Godard. The seminar Outlaw Cinema: Resistance & Revolution
will offer an historical overview of these cinematic (and often cultural /
political) outlaws in their times and places and discover what they have to
teach us today.

[Seminar Fri.-Sun., 2 PM; see schedule for
films.]

KEY TO MAINTAINING THE CONVERSATION and community that is Flickerings
is the participation of filmmakers at many levels. We've been especially
privileged to see a growing number of regular attendees and submitters to the
Film Showcase carry on the conversation from year to year online and
face-to-face at the festival itself. Each evening at Flickerings, an
informal filmmakers' forum convenes to share with peers works-in-progress and
feedback on these, along with the common struggles of making films. In 2005,
in an effort to bring together elements of our community that otherwise tend
to drift apart, we've invited working film critics and writers among us to
join these evening Deep Focus discussions, as an opportunity to
participate together in diverse processes of the cinematic
enterprise. |

A FILMMAKING WORKSHOP HAS BEEN part of the program at Flickerings from
the beginning, and has been vital in cultivating the kind of "hands-on"
experience we aspire for this event. In previous years, we've featured
workshops involving various forms of improvisational filmmaking, along with
more structured scene production and post-production.
For 2005, we're taking the whole "workshop" idea to a new level. Instead of
dedicating the time and energy involved in walking a group of participants
through what is essentially an exercise in filmmaking, we're inviting a group
of experienced filmmakers to actually work on short projects during the
festival, with select participation from interested Flickerings attendees.
The official times for this "workshop" is on the schedule from 11:00 AM to
2:00 PM each day though each director and his/her crew may decide to
extend or adjust those hours based on the needs and/or resources of their
particular project. Winnipeg filmmakers Bevan Klassen and Kevin Nikkel, who
have been instrumental in the creation and development of Flickerings, will
both facilitate and partipate in the Film Lab. An Orientation Session kicks
things off on Thursday morning at 11:00 AM, and there will be a screening of
works-in-progress on Sunday evening at 6:00 PM.

[Film Lab Fri.-Sun., 11AM-2PM; orientation Fri., 11AM; screenings Sun., 6PM ]
If you're a filmmaker and are interested in participating in Film Lab, please
