Not of This World
Giuseppe Piccioni, Italy, 1999; 100 mins.
Sister Caterina lives in a convent, preparing to take
her final vows and join a Third World mission. Businessman Ernesto is so busy
running his business he doesn't have time to learn his employees' names. The
worlds of Caterina and Ernesto collide when the two are pulled from their
respective cloisters by the discovery of an abandoned baby.
As they are drawn together and into the life of the child, the conflict
between their respective worlds becomes a delightful running argument between
them, with Ernesto's pragmatic instincts vying against Sister Catarina's
spiritual wisdom in ways that permanently change them both. Along the way,
the film shines a light on the "extras" in the lives of the characters,
suggesting that even those in the background have dreams and hopes and
struggles: the strategy seems designed to lure the viewer from the "cloister"
that is the isolation of the Self. This profound and beautiful film is an
unknown gem, winner of the Silver Hugo at the 1999 Chicago International Film
Festival and has been steadily making fans around the world ever since.
