Code Unknown
Michael Haneke, France, 2000; 118 mins.
One of the biggest arthouse DVD buzz releases of the last
year, described by Sight & Sound as "the most intellectually
stimulating and emotionally provocative piece of European cinema of recent
times." Intersecting lives of several characters pull us into the entangling
complexities of communication, reality, and moral reality. The presence of
actress Juliette Binoche adds to the Kieslowski-like feel of this film, and
her amazing performance as an actress crossing the borders between reality and
fiction is breathtaking. Indeed, this is a film looking for the borders (or "code"),
including the contours of what it means to be human in a fragmented, postmodern age.
