NEW IN 2002: SHOOT A FILM @ CORNERSTONE CONTEST! Dovetailing with the emphasis on improvisational filmmaking at our new Deep Focus program, and with an eye toward the momentous occasion of Cornerstone XX next year, Flickerings has created a new category for the 2003 Film Showcase: films shot AT Cornerstone Festival. This contest is distinct from the regular showcase Call For Entries, and we're looking forward to many people participating who might not otherwise have made a film. So start pre-production right now (films can be improvised or scripted) and we'll see you on location!! [Read More] 04.07.02
"DEEP FOCUS" TRACK FOR FILMMAKERS Deep Focus is the new interactive and hands-on track at Flickerings, designed to draw participants into direct engagement with the films and filmmakers, and also into making films themselves. This series of seminars, workshops and informal gatherings will be facilitated during the 2002 Cornerstone Festival (July 3-6) by Bevan Klassen and Kevin Nikkel of Winnipeg's Catacomb microCinema. "BETWEEN JIHAD & McWORLD" @ CORNERSTONE 2002 Cornerstone Festival is pleased this year to present a special meta-program, "Between Jihad & McWorld," a collection of seminars, films and discussions spread out over several venues examining the great collision of our time. Flickerings will be participating with our series on Iranian films, including the following documentaries: In addition to the Iranian films and the documentaries, Flickerings will also screen the independent film, Ghost World, the story of two alienated young women who seek to find their way amid the suburban mini-malled wasteland that is McWorld. The films and documentaries at Flickerings can be seen either on their own, or as a part of a schedule that includes seminars and discussions from the "Between Jihad & McWorld" program. [Read More]

FILM SHOWCASE 2002 ENTRY DEADLINE The deadline for entries for this year's Flickerings Film Showcase at Cornerstone Festival is today, and no further entries will be accepted. Thanks to all the filmmakers who sent films. We'll be posting a list of those films and filmmakers selected online in mid-April. Stay tuned for announcements about a new filmmaking competition at Cornerstone, and it's never too early to start working on your film for next year. The Call For Entries will be updated for 2003 after this year's event, but you can still check it out for a general idea of the kind of entries we're looking for and entry requirements. Again, thanks to all those who sent films for 2002! 03.1.02
2002 FLICKERINGS FILM SHOWCASE DEADLINE MARCH 1st There's still plenty of time to enter your film in the 2002 Flickerings Film Showcase! Check out the Call For Entries and the official Entry Form, then hurry up and finalize that edit and get your dub in the mail. Last year, we pushed back the deadline and the entries continued to pour in after the new deadline. This year, the Cornerstone Festival powers-that-be are determined to have a complete fest program finalized by March 1st, which also happens to be our entry deadline. What that means is we're either going to have to stay firm on that deadline, or push it back again, and simply not publish the chosen entries in the program. While we agonize over that decision, you finish up your film. Or start it! Hey, there's still time... (But even if you miss the deadline, you won't want to miss Flickerings @ Cornerstone 2002, featuring even more "shop talk" sessions for filmmakers. More on that in days to come...) FLICKERINGS 2002 TO FEATURE IRANIAN FILMS Even before Iran made the headlines last year for sweeping awards at international film festivals and more recently for other reasons, we'd been planning to spotlight this exciting national cinema at Flickerings 2002. We're currently finalizing a program that includes many of the most talked-about Iranian films of the past two years, and the schedule should be ready to announce in the weeks to come. In the meantime, we've posted a feature article here at the Flickerings site on The Revolutionary Cinema of Iran, along with a Survey of Iranian Directors. The spotlight on Iranian films is only part of the "Featured Screenings" program at Flickerings 2002, so stay tuned for further announcements. 02.08.02
SELECT FILM CLIPS FROM 2001 SHOWCASE POSTED ONLINE At last year's debut of the Flickerings Film Showcase @ Cornerstone Festival, we filled the house with festgoers eager to see our premiere slate of showcase films solicited from filmmakers at all levels: professional, college, parent's basement. Since then, we've posted a half dozen of the most popular short films for our own mini online film fest. You can learn all about last year's debut Flickerings by checking out the post-fest report and taking a look at the 2001 program pages.
