Ghost World
Enid and Rebecca are trying to rise above mindless consumerism, but the
culture keeps pulling them down and even if they could escape, where
would they go? Terry Zwingoff (Crumb) offers more questions than
answers in Ghost World, but the questions are dead-on, as are the
characterizations and incidents Enid and Rebecca encounter on their journey
through the mini-malled suburban wasteland. More importantly, their struggle
for authenticity and meaning is our own, and we have a stake in their quest
for Something More. The blues-loving geek Seymour, a role the R. Crumb-like
Steve Buscemi was born to play, is at first the brunt of the girls' jokes,
but later offers Enid her first clue to a possible escape from the smothering
sameness of McWorld.
