The Color of Paradise
So many moviegoers in the West have been introduced to Iranian films by the
gorgeous films of Majid Majdi. Majidi has made his reputation with
beautifully-photographed, almost pastoral, films featuring children.
Children of Heaven was the story of a pair of siblings who had to
share a pair of shoes between them, a story that climaxed in an exciting foot
race. In this year's Baran, a pair of young workers bring life and
humanity to a dingy construction site. The Color of Paradise captures
the essential zest for living and eye for beauty and wonder that Majdi films
communicate. Ironically, the hero of this story is a blind boy who, despite
his own limitations, has a sense of, and personal connection to, an order and
meaning in the universe that nearly everyone else seems oblivious to.
Eight-year-old Mohammad has a way of awakening those around him to what he
sees, and this film will do the same for you.
